Mission
The Division of Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Safety and Security aspires to raise awareness of the risks associated with hazardous materials and their potential threat to the University and the wider community if mishandled. In addition, the Division strives to ensure the safe disposal of hazardous waste and endeavors at the same time to enhance the knowledge and expertise of academic staff and students on chemical, biological, and radiological safety within University laboratories. It is noteworthy that these efforts are dovetailed by the organization of a slew of local and international scientific conferences, workshops, and the dissemination of informational materials, including posters and warning signs, in laboratories and storage facilities.
Vision
- To control the handling and transportation of hazardous chemical, biological, as well as radiological materials within the University.
- To implement chemical, biological, and radiological, along with nuclear safety and security measures in strict compliance with precise regulations and guidelines.
Objectives
- To lead and coordinate the response to hazardous material incidents with a view to ensure the safety of all personnel and implement robust safety measures for the handling and storage of dangerous substances.
- To maintain up-to-date inventories of chemical and biological materials under the supervision of qualified specialists.
- To oversee the management of storage facilities containing hazardous chemical and biological materials.
- To conduct regular security assessments for the identification of vulnerabilities which facilitate thorough evaluation of potential institutional risks.
- To ensure routine maintenance of fire extinguishing equipment in storage areas to make sure the visibility and accessibility of all devices.
- To perform regular testing and maintenance of fire alarm systems so as to secure their connection to the fire and civil defense control room and make certain they are operated from time to time to ensure their validity. remain operational at all times.
- To establish and implement safe and efficient methods for the disposal of chemical and biological waste which prevents accumulation in storage facilities.
- To develop and execute comprehensive emergency response and evacuation plans dedicated to the protection of staff and students during incidents. These plans include the evacuation of all concerned laboratories in cooperation with University security, civil defense, and health emergency services in the event of an incident.
