Aims and objectives
The number of overweight and obese people has increased rapidly over recent years in numerous countries [1]. In radiography, problems frequently rise with imaging obese patients and there is an associated increase in radiation dose and image quality (IQ) reduction [2]. Problems can include additional X-ray beam attenuation, increased scatter radiation and longer exposure times which can result in motion artefacts [2-4]. Currently, no studies have been published to investigate the influence of obesity on IQ when undertaking adult chest X-ray (CXR) using standard imaging clinical protocols, between and within hospitals.
