The Department of English Language, Faculty of Education, Al-Zahraa University for Women, held a scientific seminar entitled “Critical Stylistics: An Approach to Ideological Implication” on Tuesday, 24 January 2023, at 9:30 a.m. in Umm Abiha Hall.
The seminar was chaired by Lect. Dr. Wafa Abbas Al-Sahan, Head of the Department of English Language at ZUW, who delivered a lecture entitled “Prioritising and Ideological Manifestations: A Critical Stylistic View.”
The seminar also featured a lecture by Prof. Azhar Hassan Saloumi, University of Karbala, entitled “Critical Stylistics and Critical Discourse Analysis as Basic Critical Approaches in Linguistics.” This was followed by a lecture delivered by Asst. Lect. Ali Hussein Abd Al-Ameer, University of Karbala, entitled “Critical Stylistics: Ideology and Naturalisation in Both Literary and Non-Literary Texts.”
Additionally, the said event was attended by Prof. Dr. Iman Bahiya, Dean of the Faculty of Education; Lect. Dr. Mohammed Kadhim Al-Maamouri, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education for Scientific Affairs; members of the academic staff of the Department of English Language; and a number of female students.
The seminar explored the principal concepts of critical stylistics as an approach to analysing the underlying ideologies embedded within texts through their structural features. It concluded with a discussion session during which attendees raised questions. At the close of the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Education presented certificates of appreciation and participation to the seminar speakers.
