The Arabic Language Department, Faculty of Education at Al-Zahraa University for Women, held a scientific workshop entitled “Religious Discourse in Sudaif ibn Maymūn Poetry”. Additionally, Asst. Lect. Tabarak Hameed Hussein presented the session on Monday, 13 March 2023, in the Department’s lecture hall.
The workshop introduced participants to the emerging trend of cultural criticism, which examines the ideas and beliefs conveyed within literary discourse through aesthetic texts. Besides, exploring the deeper layers of literary discourse to uncover the hidden cultural structures requires the presence of influential figures through whom such frameworks are expressed. For this reason, the workshop focused on the Abbasid poet Sudaif ibn Maymūn, a Black Arabic poet who was executed by the Abbasids due to his direct opposition to authority and his open declaration of loyalty to their adversaries.
