As part of the distinguished academic and scientific contributions of the faculty members at the College of Health and Medical Technologies, Al-Zahraa University (PBUH) for Women, Prof. Dr. Hamed Ibrahim Aboud, Head of the Department of Radiology Technology , chaired the PhD dissertation defense of researcher Zaina Hassan Ubaid at the College of Science, University of Thi-Qar.
The dissertation was entitled:
“Improving the Performance of Gas Sensors Based on Janus Monolayers to Detect Toxic Gases: A DFT Study.”
The defense was held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, before a specialized academic committee. The research presented an in-depth theoretical investigation into enhancing the performance of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-based gas sensors through various strategies, including metal oxide doping, transition metal doping, strain engineering, and heterostructure design, using Density Functional Theory (DFT).
The study produced promising findings, demonstrating significant improvements in the sensitivity and performance of toxic gas sensors, highlighting the potential of these advanced nanomaterials for the development of next-generation, high-performance gas sensing technologies with broad environmental and industrial applications.
Prof. Dr. Hamed Ibrahim Aboud’s role as chair of the dissertation committee reflects the academic excellence of Al-Zahraa University (PBUH) for Women and the active contribution of its faculty members to scientific research and postgraduate education across Iraqi universities.
