The English Language Department at the Faculty of Education, Al-Zahraa University for Women, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Department, organised a scientific workshop on Dan Brown’s novel Inferno. The workshop was led by Asst. Lect. Amani Abd Al-Kadhim and attended by a group of faculty members and female students in one of the department’s halls.
The workshop explored the Autoimmune Theory, originally a medical concept, and its application to literary texts. The theory reflects the paradox of self-harm to save the self. For instance, some individuals may develop disturbed patterns of thinking that lead them to acts of violence or even self-destruction, under the illusion that such actions benefit society, when in fact they stem from deeply rooted pathological thoughts that are difficult to cure at later stages.
The workshop sought to deliver a clear message: when someone seeks help, it is crucial to listen attentively and address their psychological struggles. Additionally, confrontation or aggression in such cases only worsens the situation. Therefore, it is essential to treat such psychological disorders at an early stage before it is too late.
