The College of Engineering and Information Technology Hosts a Training Workshop on the Sustainability of Building Crafts and the Manufacture of Karbala Tile

The College of Engineering and Information Technology, in cooperation with the Maintenance Department at the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain, organized a theoretical and practical training workshop titled: “Sustainability of Building Crafts: The Manufacture of Karbala Tile (Kashi Karbalai).” The workshop was held under the patronage of the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Ghada Al-Mulla, supervised by Dr. Haider Naji Atiyah from the Department of Architecture, and in collaboration with the Continuous Education Center, with the active participation of first-year architecture students.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the students' connection to the local architectural heritage and to solidify the urban identity of the Holy City of Karbala, by introducing traditional building crafts and highlighting their significance in authentic Iraqi architecture.

The event featured theoretical sessions covering the history of Karbala tile manufacturing and traditional mirror mosaic work (Aineh-Kari). This was accompanied by practical applications where students participated in various stages of the craft, as well as field tours to inspect samples of Karbala tiles and the architectural details of “Taq Al-Za'faran” (The Saffron Arch).

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Haider Naji Atiyah, Engineer Ghufran Farooq Mattar, and Mr. Muhammad Nizar Jaber, a master trainer in Karbala tile manufacturing, alongside specialists from the Maintenance Department at the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain. The event witnessed outstanding interaction from the students, who praised the importance of such applied initiatives in bridging the gap between academic learning and local architectural and cultural heritage.
